History and Origination

The Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer arrived in the city of New York in 1872 when he was 16 years old. He started to work for J. Eugene Robert, his brother-in-law who used to import Swiss watches of fine quality. Albert Wittnauer along with his younger brother felt the need of a locally produced durable watch for the American people in order to keep down costs.

The most interesting part about the company’s inception is that Mr. Wittnauer, although young very much knew about watch making. So this just added to the business of his brother-in-law. Soon after he proved to be an asset for his business two more of their brothers along with a sister would join the trade. So in a way this soon took the shape of a small business by the family itself. Their initial unique selling point rested in bringing down the prices of Swiss pocket watches. Since the watches started selling well, by the year 1885 Mr. Wittnauer started importing chronograph watches as well!  

After the formal establishment of Wittnauer brand, Albert Wittnauer was the chosen title by Mr. Robert and the company was established under the name of The A. Wittnauer Company. What started as a family business transformed into a small company in 1890. Moreover this company shifted their focus on the ever growing private and scientific exploration world. Astronomers, explorers and navigators found Wittnauer watches very reliable and this made the Wittnauer Company reputed.

There was further involvement of the company with the navy for the purpose of early tests in navigation and aviation which were budding fields then. Wittnauer Watches are said to have always looked bright for their technological advancements. Yes they have made it a point to use technology of the highest kind for their watches. This certainly keeps their customers happy and one Mr. Marvin E. Whitney who happened to be a horologist once commented about Wittnauer Watches that Wittnauer was the only company engaged in producing and designing so varied kinds of navigation related timepieces and involved in expeditions making history.

After her last brother’s death Martha Wittnauer held Wittnauer Company reins in 1916. She was one of the small numbers of CEOs of a main American company. Bulova eventually bought Wittnauer Company.
